Litmus test for Google

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi

Three search engines – Google, Yahoo! and MSN – rule the roost in the domain of online “search”. Google’s dominance, which accounts for more than 60 per cent, makes it monotheism for million of online users who believe that there is only one search engine called “Google”.
But the Google Gorilla is facing new danger, with the launch of Microsoft’s new search engine: bing.com. Microsoft move to have a space for itself in the search engine world came after its failed attempt to buy Yahoo!
Is Google worried? Will Microsoft be able to show its offline power in online? – are some of the questions rounding up in the web world.
Bing.com is not the first search engine pitching in the “search” canvass. Before that many attempts had been made. Their launch was hyped to the hilt, but in due course of time these search engines failed to show their sheen, and were not able to meet at par the Google experience.
One is Cuil (pronounced as Cool), developed by former employees of Google, Anna Patterson and Russell Power. The much anticipated fear that Cuil will destabilize Google, even failed to come half-way. Forget, becoming the second Google.
In Cuil, the bishnupriyamanipuri.com doesn’t show up. So someone using Cuil search engine, don’t expect that it will throw up the whole repository of the site.
The mantra for success for any search engine is multi-fold. One of the key factors on which search engine’s sink or swim goes with the experience of the users. If it failed to comes up with intelligent, correct, reliable, and efficient answers, than with bulging cost of operation the search engine itself goes out of search.

However, in the past weeks another search engine had its launch. The search engine WolframAlpha answers a particular type of user’s query. “Enter your question or calculation, and WolframAlpha uses its built-in algorithms and a growing collection of data to compute the answer; based on a new kind of knowledge-based computing,” claims the search engine.
Enter “Bishnupriya Manipuri”, you will see a difference from what you are accustomed to look at in Google search. WolframAlpha comes up with facts and figures about the Bishnupriya Manipuri community. That was not there in Google experience.
To the question, is Google’s dominance in the online search in danger? No, firstly because Google is an export of Silicon Valley; secondly, it is a manifestation of American citizen belief that, for all their recent travails, their fate still lies in their own hands [Economist]. Fourth is again being an American product: tradition of close relations between universities and industry. Last, its most secretive algorithm curry that makes all the difference from other search engines.
Yes, Google dominance will diminish in the coming years. Reasons: In countries like Russia and South Korea, Google is not the first option people look at. The Russian search engine market is dominated by Baidu, and in South Korea, it is Naver. Secondly, Microsoft clout in software with its Office suit is ubiquitous and well-known. Probability of success goes high when it is product of Microsoft, after all.

You’re receiving SMS from bishnupriyamanipuri.com

The blog has acquired the URL http://www.bishnupriyamanipuri.com/ yesterday exactly at 8.30 pm. Now onwards, readers can directly type in the browser address bar “bishnupriyamanipuri.com” and visit here. However, special care has been taken to those who will be visiting the earlier “http://bishnupriyamanipuri.blogspot.com/” web domain. They will be seeing the same. There is no hair-separation between the two domains.

It is to be mentioned that it is just a change of web address/ URL; there is no change of its functioning. The heart and soul of the “blog” remains the same.

Let me reiterate – there has been no change of contents between the two domains. It has been done primarily after getting analytics feedback of the blog which shows a population of users is searching with “Bishnupriya manipuri .com”. It is simply to position the blog so that they don’t remain away from the blog.

Keep on reading! Thanks

All’s well that ends well

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi

For millions of online publishers who are using the services of the web-based feed distributor FeedBurner, for them the February month had been tough and full of anxiety. They had to transfer their website’s / blog’s feed from FeedBurner to Google.
Importance of FeedBurner could be gauged from the fact that the blog is using the services of FeedBurner to distribute content feeds to its subscribers. The email alert they are receiving in their inbox it is through it. The management of the subscribers is being done using FeedBurner.
With so much in stake, remaining away from Feedburner that is for a whole month was like living with out oxygen. Not only one go blank with the subscriber list but at the same time statistics that the blog generates.
Sleepless night had been spent by millions of FeedBurner’s users; they endured hard at this crisis time! The change of platform brings with it litany of other changes. One had to master the transition and at the same time get acquainted with the new Google environment.
The transition for the users took place since Google acquired it in June 1, 2007 believing that the “feed-based content and advertising is a developing space” where Feedburner can add value for users, advertisers and publishers.
Though the last date of the transition was February 28, 2009, still “Google Adsense’ users can do it. If you don’t have a Google Adsense user account, create one. After the transition is made, DON’T FORGET to log in the “Google Feedburner” with “Google adsense username”.
Presently when millions of web site or blogs are running on cobwebs of online services, the costs that one has to be pay is by spending sleepless nights that we all have spent when any such changes do take place in the internet landscape. Now when the transition has been done successfully – feeds have been resumed and statistics have been fetched – one could say “All’s well that ends well”.
If you are facing any such problem, do comment in this post.

Social networking site northeasterner.in launched

Watch the latest video – Bishnupriya Manipuri Delhi Video 4

When Google has gone down to the bottom of oceans with Google Earth (it will soon launched), the northeastern part of the country is still gasping for an online space, it fails to showcase the beauty it is blessed with. Reasons are many and varied. But Northeasterner.in is one more addition to the online landscape for the northeasterner to communicate, co operate and collaborate for greater understanding and prosperity of the entire region.

In an interview with the people behind the project they revealed what their site is all about:

Who is behind the project?

The project began as a hobby to familiarize oneself with the best practices of web programming. Ingudam Manoranjan, as a computer programmer in one of the leading software industry, keeps learning new technologies. Also there was a need felt to launch a platform which is common to the entire Northeast India. So far, we have websites that are focused mainly on individual States. Other websites that are focused on Northeast are either news or tourism focused. We wanted a complete platform where northeasterners can communicate, co operate and collaborate for greater understanding and prosperity of the entire region.

Once the project got started, Ingudam Manoranjan has been joined by fellow enthusiasts like Lalit Asem, another software engineer and Shymananda Sapam , also working in the most popular website of the world. We have also been supported by various people, like Bison Heisnam who also give creative inputs and others who give advices on contents.

What prompted you to launch the site?

As mentioned above, the need to have a common platform for northeasterners where we can communicate, cooperate and collaborate for greater understanding and bring prosperity to the region. In doing so, we will also be promoting Northeast India to the outside world.

How the site is different from other social networking sites like orkut and facebook?

It will not be fair to compare with industry leaders like Orkut and Facebook. They have reached a level of maturity which Northeasterner website can only dream about now. I would say, Northeasterner website’s concept is different from Orkut and Facebook. It is based on what web developers call “mash up” website – where quite a lots of contents are flowing in from other places on one hand, and lots of our user based contents are also flowing out.

It is just that one of the features of Northeasterner website is social networking. It is like the first version of Orkut, if we must compare. But then the challenges of Orkut and Northeasterner are not the same. Orkut needs to program with scalability in mind from day one whereas we can relax a bit on that criterion. We still have not come up with Northeasterner application development APIs etc where developers can develop small modules/application sitting on northeasterner website which talks to their sites. We may come up one day as and when there is a requirement.

How technically sound is the site?

The site is based on one of the best open source content management system (Joomla), which has been deployed around the world. It has burned in thousands of PDs (person days) of effort from around the world. I would say, as far as the platform is concerned, the site is sound as can be.

On the hosting part, again we have the best hosting provider that we can have. We are hosting in spaces provided by Yahoo, an industry leader in internet industry.
As far as the developers of the website are concerned, there is a total experience of 14 years in various technologies amongst the team.

And yes, what are you doing to safeguard the privacy of the users?

We take the privacy of users seriously. The platform takes care of the privacy aspect like non registered users cannot see personal details etc. However, we still have not built in features like Orkut where users can decide who to see scraps and who not to see etc.

What is your view on the low penetration of internet in the northeastern states?

We believe that is still the larger problem of India as a whole. Northeast India in particular is acute due various regions, both governmental and non-governmental. We believe this will change sooner than later. We have one of the best human resources in India, in terms of potential. (High literacy rates). 20% of the IT workforce in India is from North East India [Source - A speech by Mani Shankar Aiyar, Minister of Development of North East Region (DoNER)]. It speaks for the potential that is waiting to be tapped.

Do you think the site will bring together people who are albeit unknown of the people of the same region?

Yes, we believe so. That’s the fundamental idea of this website.

What is your opinion on the type of websites that the northeastern region throws to the world?

I think we are still in the phase where are in level 0. It’s still not a serious occupation, rather a hobby. We hope that will change though. We would like to see serious investment to see offerings which can come with latest technology. Essentially, we have the lots of interesting websites. E-Pao from Manipur is a pioneer, already completed 10 years, offers a huge stack of services. So does Kanglaonline, Kuknalim etc. Then there are tourism focused websites.

raftaar.com – a hindi language based search engine

A search engine with difference is raftaar.com. What is all about this search engine? It is a Hindi language based search engine. This is what when you google ‘raftaar.com’, you get – रफ़्तार से हिन्दी की सभी तरह की वेब साईटों पर खोजना सम्भव है। So with this search engine, Hindi language based websites will be accessible which, unfortunately, were not part of the burgeoning search engine market very lately.

The advent of the search engine ‘raftaar.com’ will definitely give a breathing space to the site owners who cater its content in the Hindi language. At least their content will be indexed, and will be recalled in the search results.

Good thing about this search engine is that as you type into the search box, raftaar.com guesses what you’re typing and offers suggestions in real time. This feature is similar to the Google Suggest tool which is still in the Google laboratory. The feature throws to you alternative spellings for your query.

One more feature which is worth of mentioning is the Hindi alphabet table just below the search box. This will definitely help, one those who are not fluent with hindi-typing and, second, to those who would love to go instantly with the exact results.

Though it is not confirmed how many web pages the search engine has indexed so far, and what are their quality. And what is the modus-operandi in churning out the results. But it is big step to lease life in the hindi language domains.

Last, and not the least, the search engine if one compares with the giant of internet Google, this would be unfair. At least at the present time. The search engine has to go a long way to come near Google search.

Google arithmetic in internet

By RK Rishikesh Sinha, New Delhi

After two hot consecutive articles (Time to engineer the Bishnupirya Manipuri Student Union and Seere Seere Shinglei, Kacha Rokot Sitadei). Excuse me! Can you go ahead with a bit technical stuff. Yes! Here it is…
Readers who are closely tracking this blog would have noticed how its position has been changing in the Google search and Yahoo! Search results, every time when they wrote “Bishnupriya Manipuri” in these browsers.
If I go by the statistics of November 9 to December 9- 573 people dropped at this blog using Google, 50 people by using Yahoo! search, and MSN by 13.
So, you can understand any online entity like this blog cannot remain blind to those things that go with the Google’s mathematics that is dropping lot of people in this blog. Ranjit Sinha are you reading (he commented in the Browser War)! However, with the Google near monopoly in the internet world – market share in the year 2008 is 63.1%, 43.7% in 2007, 35% in 2006 and 29.2% in 2005 – it is pertinent for anybody from geek to greenhorn to at least know where we are heading towards.
In its nascent stage the blog used to appear in Google’s fifth page results. Then for many months it swung between the second and the third page. And at last now for many months it is appearing in the Google’s first page, to be more appropriate first “fold”. Fold is number of times you scroll down to go at the bottom of a webpage.
Appearing in the Google’s search first page, first fold is very important. First, since people start giving value, it is a prestige to appear first. Second, you automatically become the first choice in that particular niche. Third, a feeling of satisfaction seeps in you.
How Google priorities its search results?
From the 200 signals that includes PageRank algorithm while prioritizing any site by Google, few are below mentioned.
(1) How frequently the site is updated? This is one important feature that Google see in the process of moving of site up and down. At this point, the blog has been lucky; the blog has been churning out content after content, hence it has fulfilled this condition.
(2) What is the link structure of the site? Another feature which is given great emphasis upon. Links in a website consist of inward and outward. Inward, you are linking within your site. Outward if the link goes to other sites. You can find the link of this blog in wikipedia and in many other sites.
(3) How intelligently keywords are stuffed in contents? In this blog, the keyword is “Bishnupriya Manipuri” and this I have religiously followed. From November 9 to December 9 – 99 readers came using the keyword “Bishnupriya Manipuri”. So, you can see this is a big volume.
Here I have cited three criteria on which Google mainly does its mathematics. There are lot more technical stuff. I think those naïve to the online world will at least get a primary knowledge, if I have been able to give an insight and understanding on this topic I will think that I have done my job!
Hello Ranjit (sorry I am not adding with respect “Da”. Since I don’t know you are junior or senior to me. There are lots of friends with name Ranjit in my friends list)? Do comment.
